it that the smoke alarm battery runs low at 11:00 at night, when Eric isn't home, the kids are in bed and I am tired. I was talking to Ang and then I hear the dreaded "beep, beep" of the smoke alarm telling me that the battery we put in 1 week ago is running low. I hope that it will just go away and then one minute passes and then "beep, beep". CURSE the smoke alarm. I am thinking still - maybe it will go away. I continue to talk to Ang and then "beep, beep". Now I have to get the big ladder from downstairs and attempt to fix it. I turn off the breaker and drag the ladder up stairs to change the battery. Now, to find a 9-volt battery? NONE!! Of course. This is how it always works. So, I take the dead battery (that this smoke alarm has sucked the life out of) out and find the remote for my fan has a 9-volt. It is probably old, but it should work for the night. While I am searching for a battery and the breaker is turned off and the battery is removed, I hear the dreaded "beep, beep" again. How is this possible? There is no power to the thing. I dust it off with the dust-pan broom and put the old, but new to it battery in the stupid thing and flip back on the breaker. I stand on the ladder for a few minutes listening for the dreaded thing to beep. Peace at last... no more beeping (until tomorrow).

Stupid thing.
